Dancesport Styles

DanceSport encompasses two major styles, International Style and American Style.  American style was developed in the US by the major studio chains including Arthur Murray and Fred Astaire, while International style had its origin in Britain.  Though most of the world utilizes international style exclusively, both styles are popular in the US.

International Style

  • International Standard – permits figures in closed position only

o   Waltz

o   Foxtrot

o   Tango

o   Viennese Waltz

o   Quickstep

  • International Latin – hip motion initiated by stepping onto a straight leg

o   Cha Cha

o   Rumba

o   Swing

o   Samba

o   Paso Doble

American Style

  • American Smooth – allows open positions as well as solo actions

o   Waltz

o   Foxtrot

o   Tango

o   Viennese Waltz

  • American Rhythm – hip motion is initiated by stepping onto a bent leg

o   Cha Cha

o   Rumba

o   Swing

o   Bolero

o   Mambo
