DanceSport is the competitive arm of ballroom dancing, as contrasted to recreational or exhibition dancing.  The name “DanceSport” was invented to help competitive ballroom dancing gain Olympic recognition.  The ploy worked because on 4 September 1997, DanceSport was recognized by the 106th session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).  Shortly thereafter, the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) was named the international governing body of dancesport, while USA Dance was designated as the governing body in the US.  On its website, the WDSF gives an upbeat appraisal of the chances of dancesport being included in a future summer Olympic Games.  However, dancesport has not been included as an official event of the Olympics since its recognition.
